Crimson Star Clematis

This is Crimson Star clematis ranunculaceae that I have had for
many years. The name does not reflect what I would call crimson.
It is just purple or magenta to my eyes.

It had chocolate colored stamens. At maturity it grows to 8-12
feet and has large blooms of 5-6 inches wide.

It dies back in the winter and in the Fall or Spring I
prune away the dead wood. It only blooms once for me
in late Spring or early Summer.

She likes her head in the sun and her feet shaded.

On the subject of vines, I have two Blue wisteria vines
and the first vine has failed again to bloom. Soooo I am
getting mean with her and pruned it in half. Next I am
going to dig in and shock its roots. If she doesn't bloom
next year she is gone and a new clematis will take its place.
In fact I may start the clematis already and let it climb her
vine. The other wisteria has just decided to leaf out and
if it does not bloom it is gone also. I do not have the room
for plants that will not preform for me. I sound so mean to
my plants :-)

A few of my many Atilbe's are starting to bloom. This is
a shade garden favorite of mine. I love the white against
the blue blooms of the Blue Hill Salvia.
The blooms of the Wild Phlox are now about spent and
the rain knocked of a lot of the tiny lavender blooms.

Veronica Wooly Speedwell is also starting to bloom.

White Balloon Flowers campunala makes the
blue Delphiniums stand out. Can you tell I like
blue and white flowers planted together?

I just love the clematis, it looks similar to the one I posted today. I'm always on the the look out for new ones. I'm the same way with my plants. I give them a few years and if they aren't doing anything it's time to move on.
You have a really nice variety blooming now.

How or what do you use to get it to climb ( clematis) I have one on a fence but it just doesn't seem to climb?

Your clematis looks like my Starburst. Could mine be missed labeled? mine sure doesn't look like what I would call starburst. I got it this spring.

That's a lovely Clematis, but I would call it magenta, too. I love your blue and white combinations. I planted Astilbe for the first time this year (white). If it works well, I'd like to try it in other colors, too.

Beautiful flowers! My astilbe, salvia and campanula aren't quite close to flowering yet. Maybe next week, so until then I'll enjoy soaking in the beauty via your blog photos. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Lona~~ I've heard/read that if Wisteria vines are grown from seed, they'll take much longer to bloom than a grafted plant will.

Your C. 'Crimson Star' looks a lot like my C.'Earnest Markham.' Beautiful blossoms. Don't they just make you feel good?

Love the clematis. Have been a little shy about pruning mine....Your not mean to your plants at all, I feel the same way, pull your weight or you are out of here!

So nice to see your gardens grow, from the looks of your photos, the gardens are off to a great start! I have a Wisteria vine that's a few years old that never bloomed, it is just now leafing out, too.

Your clematis is gorgeous. Looks as if it's very happy with its situation chez vous. The astilbe/sage combination is rather lovely.
