Yarrow Time

I have several yarrow plants that are starting to bloom
now. Two pink varieties, 'Oertela Rose' and 'Richard Nelson'
which is just a more neon pink, and the standard
white yarrow to brighten up the flowerbed. I have a new red
one 'Paprika' but I do not think it is going to do much this
season for some reason. Maybe it needs more time to
settle in.

Meet 'Oertela Rose' Achillea.

Meet 'Richard Nelson' Achillea.

I think one of these has to be moved because my kids
cannot see through the yarrow and I cannot see
the kids for the yarrow.
It will most likely be the kids since the yarrow is happy
where it is.

My Brandywine tomatoes are blooming.
Now where are the honey bees??

Happy Gardening Everyone!

Love your pink yarrow - I too had yarrow in my blog- my picture isn't as nice as your's. I have yellow from my Mothers herb bed and it is HAPPY! I bought a red one last year and it was very slow to adapt to my garder but this year it bloomed and is pink, not red! I don't know if I am upset about this or not.

That is a very pretty plant. It would probably be easier to move the kids than the plant. I have never tried a tomato plant like that one. Helen

That two different pinks are really pretty. I have a white one, but lust after the pinks!

I love yarrow -- the lacy leaves, delicate flowers...thanks for the photo of the Brandywine. I've been meaning to measure mine -- it's the tallest of my plants! Janet

Lona, they are lovely. I just love Yarrow. Years ago on Gardening Naturally with Eliot Coleman and his wife Barbara I remember seeing a beautiful salmon colored one- it was a beauty! Someday I'd like that color and yours too :)

I love them. I have both the pinks and white from seed this year that has not bloomed yet. It looks best for me tucked in with other tall things. Mine is near a hydrangea and Bach. Buttons. It keeps it standing up with a bit of help.

I was given a yarrow last year, and am now waiting to see what color the flowers are.

Lona~~ I am so smitten with Yarrows. The photo of the warm pink umbels next to the children looks very romantic and Victorian. Beautiful!

I love yarrow and it's feathery leaves! I've never seen a pink variety - I really like yours! Just starting to see the beginnings of flowers on some of our tomato plants, but the peppers are doing the best so far - we've got baby peppers on lots of our plants!

I did not know that there are more colors of yarrow than white. I have more to learn about this plant. I love the pinks.

the yarrow in my neighbors yard is out of control...and not nearly as pretty as yours...I am kinda thinking of putting it in the alley behind our fence...where only weeds like to be! It would make a pretty display as we drive in...and it seems easy to please...as he doesn't do much of anything in his yard!

oh dear friend...I hope you did not take my last comment as an insult...I did not mean it that way at all!!! I meant to say that I am gaining a new respect and love for this pretty plant...and I want some in this color! is that better? if the other one sounded ignorant...delete it! K?

I've just been reminded of yarrow over at Catherine's - Gardener in Progress! I used to grow it in a previous garden and had forgotten how lovely it is. Yours looks lovely with the statues.

Heather: Loved your wild flower article. It is amazing what we pass up each day and do not see the beauty of it all.

Phoenix & Willow: Yarrow comes in so many great colors now and it will grow in my hard clay soil.

Bagchik & Stephanie: They are a feather foliage plant.I like that about them plus all the new colors it comes in now.

Grace: It is an old fashioned plant. My grandmother use to love the blooms of the wild ones.

Tessa: I would really love a salmon colored one. Have to keep my eyes open for that one.

Brooke: I use them for filler plants also. They also hide earlier spent bloomers.

Janet; Your Brandywines are out growing mine.

Cathy; I cannot wait to see the red ones bloom.

Thistledew: Oh, I hope mine are red and not pink :-) I would like them anyway though.

Helen: This is my first year for trying the Brandywines also. So the jury is still out on how they will be.

Janet: If I can figure out how to save the seeds from them I would gladly send you some.

Cindee: I have white and love it to brighten or break up my colors of flowers.

KeeWee: A surprise yarrow. Anticipation on what color it will bloom what fun.

Tootsie: LOL! no I did not take offense at all. I think it would be a great idea. The butterfly's will appreciate it and it will look good coming into the driveway. Yarrow can grow anywhere too.

Joe: Thanks for the offer but I have enough critters.

I think you'll like the Paprika when it comes in. It's deep red when it initially blooms (like the spice), and then gradually fades to apricot. The new foliage is also very lush and pretty, although as the flowers age it gets kinda dried up. I've found that if I cut mine back hard in early July, after the flowers are spent, I get nice new growth and a second, much smaller flush of flowers later in the summer.

That said...I think your pink ones are very pretty, too!
