The Awaking

As I visit the various blog postings one thing
has become apparent, Spring is trying to awaken
and bringing forth the first green sprouts or the
first flowers of the season.
In different parts the little green tips are just
appearing and in other gardens the spring
blooms are bursting out in riots of color and
fragrance.
It is so welcome here this winter where it seemed
like the longest winter on record, but really maybe
we have become a little spoiled where the weather
is concerned.
This winter seemed more like the winters that
we had when I was a child ,with streams frozen over
and a covering of snow all winter long.
Yeah, yeah, that was many years ago. LOL!
But not the ice age.

So even the least unfurling or tip of green that
has begun to appear has brought a sigh of relief.
The sun has returned and with it anticipation
starts those old gardeners juices to flowing in
the veins again, like the sap from the Sugar Maples.
Please no jokes on how we are a sappy lot.
Well maybe some of us.

So at last it seems that Spring is awaking slowly
like the unfurling of this fern.

Peeking out slowly but not all at once
because we will still have those frosts and even
some snow showers yet before Spring finally
decides to stay around.

Hopefully the fruit trees will not bloom too soon
and be ruined by the frosts yet to come.

But even that will not stop the primroses from blooming.

Or the moss from growing.

This hibiscus would not do too well yet though if it were
blooming outdoors and not in the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Neither would this coleus.

March winds may be good for kites but not for these beauties
that are in the Palm garden.

But now is the time when Spring is awaking.
Whatever took you so long !

There is a purpose to this Awaking Posting
and that is the March contest at ”Gardening Gone Wild”.
The theme is ‘Awakening’ and my entry is the picture
of the fern unfolding. There are so many wonderful
pictures entered into the contest. The contest ends March
21st, so get those pictures entered.

Happy Gardening Everyone!

I have been out planting my cold crops in myvery small vegetable garden. I have daffodils that are just about to open. I'm afaid these are my mystery ones as I didn't put a label in the ground. Thought I would remember!

I love the picture of the fern unfurling, it looks like it could move and talk.

Good luck with your photo. The awakening sounds very romantic for for a topic about stuff pushing up thru dirt:) Still, it makes our gardener's hearts beat faster when we see those new bits of green just emerging from the mud.

My garden is just beginning to come alive. And we're supposed to have temps in the low 30's this weekend!

Hi Lona~~ I LOVE the fern photo. It's got to be a winner. It depicts so skillfully the unfurling of spring, like arms stretching to embrace the sun's warmth.

I'm afraid I'm one of those sappy folks. LOL

Lona, what wonderful photos you have to offer us today! The fern is an alltime favorite of mine. And the colors of the primrose are so bright and cheerful. Your shot of the moss is peaceful and kind. Very enjoyable!
I'm also SOOOOO HONORED that I clicked on your blog to see that you've featured my blog. Thank you so very, very much! I'm glad, and humbled, that you enjoy it. And I'm glad that my sweet Lola gets the limelight...she deserves it. Everyone that knows her loves her! :)

Your fern is perfect for the awakening theme, what a pretty picture! I'm glad that it's beginning to feel a little more like spring there.

Wonderful post! Your words have captured the 'awakening' beautifully.
This spring is really special, coming after one of the coldest winters seen in a long time.
Your choice of photograph for the contest is very good...Best of Luck!

Hi Lona,
somehow your posts get disguised in my google-reader list, and I seem to miss quite a few of them. Hmmm.... wonder how that is even possible.
Anyhow, I loved that fern photo today! So pretty and tender, a real spring sign.
The best sign I've had so far is that yesterday evening all the snow on our roof came down. Really loud and scary. I first thought that the rooftop itself came down... but, nope - all is well here!
Have a nice weekend!

Lona, the flowers that look like the Chinese fringe flower plant that I have. But since this one the flowers grow out from the stems like that, it looks more like witch-hazel plant that I see from photos.
