Seasons of the Hills

Seasons Of The Hills

BowedBranches

Winter in the Hills can be a wondrous sight,
Gleasoning with the snow looking pure and white.
With splashes of red from the Cardinals dressed in their finery,
Red berries of the Sassafras and Sumac add color to the scenery.
The White Oaks and Poplar dressed in black bark ,rising in grander,
Ice crystals building upon the brooks banks as the waters meander.
Great icicles formed on hillsides rocked walls, sparkling in the suns glow,
And pillars of ice looking like marble from frozen water falls that flow.

Fall in the Hills is more beautiful in the tapestry of colors one sees,
The ranges from yellow, golden, orange, red and scarlet of the trees.
Rustling sounds of Squirrels and Chipmunks as storing their nuts
they scurry,
And golden cornfields and soybeans, before the rains are to be picked
in a hurry.
Fields of Black-eyed-Susan's, Goldenrod, and Queen Anne's lace that
grow free,
The orange of Falls pumpkins, and in mounds colorful mums are
arrayed brightly.
Falls cool nights and humidity forms mists of fog that arise from
the valley below,
Covering and watering the landscapes, and for dried lawns that
have turned yellow.

Summer in the Hills, rolling in green and its pines greener still,
Bring shade to its gorges, sheltering woodland ferns that grow freely
at will.
Mosses now covering rocks that are scattered along crystal clean brooks,
The smell of wild roses and honeysuckle growing upon fences and into
tree forks.
Splashes of color from wildflowers in fields along country roads,
The sounds of the Whippoorwill and Bobwhite, and the croak of the
rain toad.
Lightening bugs lighting over the fields like millions of tiny stars,
The scolding of the Blue Jays building their nest and the songs of
the Larks.

Spring in the Hills is the most amazing season of the whole year,
A time when Winter flows down rocky traces and the first Robins appear.
The mushrooms and the May apples shooting up upon the hillsides,
Blossoms of the Dogwood tree color the woods along with the butterflies.
The grasses and the mosses are greening again, woodlands lacey ferns
are unfurling,
Lilac's sweet fragrance fill gentle breezes, along with Sugar Maple seeds whirling.
A time of new beginnings, fresh starts, and from death to new birth,
For there is a time for every season upon this earth.

I agree with you, Lona, spring ANYWHERE is the best season. But it looks like spring in the hill is especially lovely. Your dogwood is spectacular. Happy May to you, too.

Lona ~ How beautiful your hills are during all seasons. It is something we wish we had down here, being able to have the different seasons, instead of one just blending into the other.

Have a wonderful weekend in all that beauty that is surrounding you.

What a beautiful poem, your pictures show just how pretty it is there. I love that you have 4 distinct seasons there, here it's sort of wet and cold and then wet and warmer. :)

Isn't wonderful to live where there is four seasons. But I always truly appreciate spring when all is new again. Happy May Day.

I can't really choose Lona. Spring looks good, but so do the autumn colors. And that blanket of snow on the branches - very pretty! Aren't we lucky to have seasons? I used to work in Africa (near the equator) and there was hardly any difference between seasons. Sunny and warm may seem like the perfect weather, but I much prefer our climate.

Spring has always been my favorite season, but with the wonderful fall plantings now available and the emphasis on fall as an experience, I am really beginning to like it.

I can't have real pumpkins anymore because the squirrels have them eaten as I put them out. I don't even want to think about this now.

Long live spring and summer!

Beautiful celebration of the seasons! (though I admit our seasons here are not so well-defined)

Does anyone appreciate the seasons as much as a gardener? Your poetry and photos are just wonderful.

I'm off to go crazy in my May garden now:)
