Blustery Friday Blooms

We had a very stormy night Wednesday here in
Ohio. I was a little scared for the first time in a
long time.  The wind and lightening was fierce.
Limbs, leaves and trees were flying and falling.
The washed potting containers that I had finally
gotten washed up that day were scattering across
the yard along with anything else that was setting
around.

TreesDown4_June3

How all those limbs from the old Oak tree missed
smashing my glass ball I will never know.

TreesDown3_June3

Not to mention this big Honey Locust tree
that decided to break off and come crashing
down….

TreesDown_June3

just missing my gardening shed. The limbs got
picked up from all over the yard and tossed away
but this old locust tree will have to wait for the
chain saw.

FlattenedFlowers_June3

Some of the flowerbeds were flattened and
were looking just awful. Hopefully they will
straighten back up.
I was glad I had taken pictures that day before
the storm hit.

Stachy2_Lambsear_June2

The Stachy’s Lambs Ear looked a whole lot
better before the storm.

Achillea_Apricot

The Achellia millefolium ‘Apricot Delight’
Yarrow stood up fairly  well..

Achillea_Apricot_June3

but the bungei Foxtail yellow lily’s
blooms which bloom from the bottom
up…

Lily_Bungei_Foxtail_Yellow

looked less than beautiful after the storm.

Lily_Foxtail_June2

The achillea and lily are in a new bed where
I was trying to broaden my color palette into
some yellow, peach, browns and orange colors
of which I am not that fond of. Maybe it is a
phobia of mine from the olive green and orange
days of the seventies. I think I will dub it my
“Hippie” bed. LOL!

Fertilizer_Friday

Some other blooms in the garden this week
to add to today’s Fertilizer Friday and Flaunting
of Our Flowers with hostess Tootsie over at
Tootsie Time were:

Hydrangea_BlueberryParfait_June2

Hydrangea ‘ Blueberry Parfait’
with a dead bug added in that I did not see when I took
the picture.

Hydrangea_Nikko_june2

Hydrangea ‘ Nikko’ Blue

Hydrangea_Nikkoshrub_June2

The Nikko Hydrangea bush is starting to turn blue now
so I think I will post it from time to time until it is one
big blue ball.

Lily_Stella_Bug

‘Stella de Oro’ Lily with a coordinating bug to match.

Lily4_Lolypop_June2

‘Lolypop’ Lilies are starting to strut their stuff.
They just get better every year. Do you think it
might be because I have never moved them? LOL!

SideFlowerbed_June2

And…..

Rose_Iceberg2_June2

one of the new additions to the Rose Garden is
this ‘ Iceberg’ I purchased from Edmund’s Roses.

Rose_Iceberg_June3

By the way, thanks to Ohio’s Black Swamp Girl over
at ” A Study in Contrasts” for giving me the answer
to my red rose take over.
It seems that quite a few roses are grafted by using
Dr. Huey roses.
My now red roses had their grafts killed so they
all were reverting back to the Dr. Huey  rose.
So problem solved and now I am getting rid of
them all. They mildew like crazy anyway so next
spring they are out of here and delegated to the
woodland bed out of the way.

MemosiaBuds

Finally for those who have followed my blog and remember
that I had to have a Mimosa tree removed when we redid
the septic system last summer but that I had two other
smaller ones around in the yard….. well one of them has
buds and will be blooming for the first time this summer.
I thought it would be at least two more years before it would
bloom because it usually takes about seven years but it must
be liking its spot in the yard.
Everyone have a good weekend and….

Happy Gardening Everyone and  join
us in Flaunting Your Flowers with Tootsie!

Until Next Time,
Lona

I lose more sleep watching those midwestern storms and hoping they miss us.. at least the high winds and hail. I had an old gardening friend who always said there was a big advantage to having younger trees in the gardens... that being that they usually stand up to the storms... sorry to hear of the damage at your gardens... So happy the storm didn't attack any thing major, but know it was frightening.
Love the Apricot Delight Yarrow and Lolypop Lilies. The others are beautiful too.

I'm glad the storm didn't damage your house or anything important. There's nothing worse than listening to the wind and hearing the cracking of trees.
You will love your 'Iceberg' rose. That is one of my favorites and easiest. I'm glad you have so many blooms on your Hydrangeas this year, I remember they didn't bloom for you last year.

I love mimosa trees, so happy to see your little blossoms...sorry to see the damage from the storm though ! Take care, Gina

Sorry to hear about the storm, it's not often you hear of such forocity here, such is the mild weather of the UK...

I hope everything stands up again quickly and the weekend holds nicer weather for you.
Meanwhile I will be hiding in the house as tomorrow is set to hit 25oC, which will mean in my back garden I can expect temperatures of at least 30, most likely higher.

I thought our early Wednesday storm was bad but yours looks a lot worse because of the big trees that came down. We just had huge amounts of water that flattened a lot of the tall plants. I tied many plants up and staked a few today.

Wow!! that was quite a storm! Doesn't look like any building damage though. Your flowers are beautiful.... I'm thinking I need some of that lambs ear. Very pretty.

Wow Lona, that storm really did a lot of damage. You are lucky it wasnt any worse than it was. Seems like you had a LOT of near misses. We have had a couple like that here. Once lightening hit a huge, old Walnut and destroyed it. My poor old, dwarf peach tree was uprooted twice before i finally gave up planting it back. It it was fruit bearing size, about 10 feet tall. You and your family came thru unscathed so thats one thing to be thankful over.By the way, LOOOVE your bungei Foxtail yellow lily, and achillea. I have never heard of that lily before, but it is such a bright cheery yellow.

Wow, We had the rain and the storms but not the damage. As usual, your flowers look wonderful. Our hydrangas are just starting to flower. jim

I'm originally from Ohio too so it was extra fun visiting your garden! Great attitude on the storm damage - your photos came out wonderfully though...hopefully everything will bounce back quickly. Thanks for sharing!

So glad that you're OK and your house was not touched. It's so hard to sit behind the window and imagine what is happening in our gardens. We have a maybe stormy weekend ahead. Love your beautiful flower pictures. Your yard must be so pretty. Have a nice weekend.

Your garden is looking wonderful, large rain storms always remind me of how powerful mother nature can be and who is really in control. Have a wonderful weekend and take care:)

It looks like a terrible storm! But your pictures of the flowers were beautiful!! You are an artist!

Well shoot, you nearly lost your garden shed. My daughter had the same thing happen in her yard during one of our rare heavey rains and then wind. I'm glad nothing was damaged. Lots of work though.
I missed this Ferilizer Friday. Next week ..I hope!

Mona

That was a fierce storm Lona. Goodness. I have friends who love to watch/listen to lightening and thunder storms but not me. They scare me too ~ especially the really violent ones like you had. I hope your garden rebounds. There are so many gorgeous things in bloom there. Never fear, the foxtail lily is still pretty ~ those things are so great. I am waiting for mine to bloom but we aren't as far along as you. Have a great (calm) weekend!!

You have lots of gorgeous flowers! That sounds like a crazy storm. We had nothing that violent a bit south of you. (Cincinnati area). I hope your flower beds recover.

Hi Lona,

I am glad the storm did not damage any structures. It is amazing that your glass ball was untouched. I hope your plants will soon recover as well. I love your pictures, especially the hydrangeas :-)

PS. Thank you very much for your kind comments.

It is quite unbelievable to see all that damage done and that glass ball still sitting amongst it all Lona!
Thank you for sharing photos of so many beautiful blooms - I hope the recovery of your garden goes smoothly! Heidi.

Oh, boy... I'm so sorry to see these big trees beaten up so badly but happy to hear that there wasn't more damage. Such pretty flowers. And nicely resilient. :)

Just trying to catch up with reading posts! Your blooms are beautiful. If you lived nearby I would come and steal blueberry parfait (perhaps we could trade for my blue pot??). So sorry about the damage, glad the shed & ball are ok. I'm sure your Stachys will recover soon.

Hi Lona~~ I'm so glad the storm wasn't any worse. Amazing that your glass ball came through unscathed.

I'm really hungry for a lollipop--the lily that is. I love it. You sound like me. A plant has to be move at least, say a half dozen times in my garden before it is finally "home." LOL
