Another Showing of Roses

This was a busy week with some grooming of all of the flower beds after all of the rain, wind and hail that we had which left  them  in a sorry state.
I am trying to stay ahead of the weeds but it is getting hard at times since they love the rain and the warm temperatures.
I also got a small corner bed redone and planted out a Wine and Roses Weigela and moved the Pow Wow Wild Berry Echinacea into it. Those poor coneflowers are so mixed up from my planting them twice this spring. The creeping phlox had grown out into the yard too far and was looking silly to be honest.Newbed2_Sunny After I redone the bed I wondered why I had not done it sooner. Maybe because I never needed a place to set the little chair and frogs before. LOL!
Fertilizer_Friday
So it is Friday already and June is whizzing by, {If I could get the Winter months to move just as fast as these Spring months do. Oh, well. LOL!}  so I am joining in with our girl Glenda over at “Tootsie Time” to “Flaunt a few more Roses”.

Burgundy_Iceberg3_Rain Some more of the roses have came into bloom since the last storm when the hail had knocked off the petals and blooms.
Burgundy_Iceberg2_Rain This is “Burgundy Iceberg” which is new this spring. Last year I planted a white Iceberg rose that bloomed all summer so I wanted to try this newer burgundy one. I love the color of this rose and I will see if it blooms as well as its white one over this season.

Burgundy_Iceberg_Rain The burgundy petals have a white shade the under side of the petals which I am liking as well. It however does not have any fragrance.

Rose2_BurgundyIceberg

SkystheLimit2
Even the “Sky’s the Limit” yellow climbing rose looks much better now that some of the blooms have opened without the benefit of the hail pounding it.

SkystheLimit

Rose_Bonica2 Another new rose that I tried for two years to get and was planted this spring was “Bonica”.

Rose_Bonica3
I have to say that I am disappointed right out of the get go with the color of its blooms. They are a much lighter shade of pink than the pictures presented of it in the catalogs and online. It is loaded with buds and I will watch it this summer to see how it does. To me it is a very washed out pink. Don’t you just hate it when they enhance the pictures of flowers to sell them and you get something entirely a different color than what you you wanted and planned on to put in a bed?
Did you hear that Wayside Nursery?
Rose_Bonica
This one may be thrown out of its spot in  the Rose Garden into another location. Maybe with the New Dawn Rose which I delegated to the shed because it only blooms once for me.

Rose_NewDawn
Do not get me wrong I love this New Dawn climbing rose I have had for years but I want roses that bloom more than once in the Rose Garden.

Copy (1) of Rose_NewDawn

The “Polka “ Rose I got from Heirloom Roses last spring could not be saved and finally died. It was a small band self rooted rose and it just would not grow right for me and I never had a bloom  from it. I am not blaming Heirloom Roses and I am certain it was my fault for not giving it better soil to grow in,  but it will be the last time I purchase a small band rose. It will be bare root roses for me from now on and definitely not those coated in paraffin which was another disaster a few years ago.

Rose_ShowGardenClimbing
Another new climbing rose that I planted to replace the “Improved Red Blaze” rose is “Garden Show”.
It is just now getting a few buds on it but I love the deep shade of pink in it.
The New Improved Red Blaze is down in the Woodland Garden now under the Bluebird house because it was another rose that bloomed only once and sparingly at that.

Melody_Parfumee2_Rain
This is “ Melody Parfumee”  rose  which has a light fragrance.

Melody_Parfumee3_Rain

None of the roses can compare to the Crimson Bouquet red rose for a strong and lasting fragrance. I dry some every summer for a potpourri.

Copy (1) of IMG_0021The red  “Crimson Bouquet” I think will always be my favorite rose for fragrance, hardiness, long lasting blooms, and all summer blooming power.

Copy (1) of FairyGarden Also this week the “Burgundy Glow” Ajuga  was moved to the Fairy garden because it was growing out into the walkway. Here under the Maple tree where it is hard to get anything to grow may just be the spot for it to spread and grow its little heart out.

Petunia_BurgundyCanCan The “Can Can Burgundy” petunias are starting to bloom that were grown from seed and I just love this petunia. I will be saving seeds from this one. It goes well with the …

Petunia_BurgundyStar
“Burgundy Star” petunia’s also grown from seeds.

 Everyone Have a Wonderful Weekend
and Happy Gardening,
Lona

Burgundy Iceberg! Just the name alone suggests fantastic parentage. About Bonica, it does seem to be pretty variable. The good news, I guess, is that it is one _tough_ customer, so if you have a "gee, never thought a rose would make it here" site in your garden, you might give it a try.

PINCH ME TO SEE IF I'M DREAMING...

I love that Burgundy Iceberg.Where in the world do you put all of these roses? If I had your yard, I would just sit and enjoy all the time. Balisha

Lona, the garden looks gorgeous. I bought a new rose in early spring, a lovely shade of pink, or so I thought. It is a very very dark magenta. Clashes with all the plants around it, sigh. Have a great weekend in the garden.

Hi Lona,

I must have one of those burgundy roses, just beautiful. I have a friend who has Bonica and it is very pink. I wonder if they sent you the wrong rose? Take a photo and send it to them and see if they can identify it.

I had New Dawn on my arbors and like you I couldn't stand that it only bloomed once and was a very strong rose. It left because I did not have another place to put it.

Crimson Bouquet I will look for since I have only Mary Rose that is fragrant.

Hi Lona! Your roses are lovely, even the one that is a light pink which you are disappointed in. I know some roses seem to wash out in hot direct sun, like my Morden's Blush rose, but do keep their colour better in a less sunny spot in the garden. Perhaps this is one of those?

I do love my Snow in Summer! It is a spreader, albeit a very slow one, and the mass of white flowers mid June are spectacular in the evening garden. Give it a try. Full sun and well-drained soil, on the dry side but not without watering. After it blooms, I trim it back and will often get more blooms later, just not so much as the first flush.

Lona, your roses are so pretty and the images after the rain, delightful. You really have a great selection and a wide variety of color too. Can't forget the petunias. They are colorful too.

Wow, you do have some beauties. I fell in love with the red of Crimson Bouquet and the burgundy of Burgundy Iceberg ... both are simply stunning! I've never been too interested in growing roses myself, but I'm wondering if I might be able to grow a couple of stunners in pots ... as there's no soil to plant them in anymore.

Lona, I'm also unhappy with Bonica, which I also planted this year. The tag and all the references I checked show a much deeper pink. Also, the bloom form is not the same.

I'm wondering if what I got (and possibly what you got as well) was an imposter. Mine was clearly tagged as Bonica, but I am questioning if it's really Bonica x Doris Tysterman. You can see info and picture here: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.792

My New Dawns are not prolific re-bloomers but they do repeat bloom in flushes. I found that if I give them a good pruning and feeding after the first blooms fade, they do bloom much better than if I ignore them.

Improved Blaze is a Hybrid Wichurana like New Dawn while the original Blaze is a Hybrid Multiflora that only blooms once. Blaze Improved should bloom through the season and if it doesn't, I would question whether it's really the Hybrid Wichurana.

You started to write something about Wayside Gardens and it was underlined, which I thought meant there was a link. Hmmm.... no link, and you didn't finish the sentence, so now I'm wondering what I didn't hear LOL.

I love that burgundy Iceberg! Only wish it had some fragrance for you, too... :) Btw, I went to Wayside Gardens' website and tried to look at their roses, but it says that they have no products available. I wonder if they had troubles with their rose fulfillment this year or something? It might be worth checking out!

Your Fairy Garden is so cute. Your rose pictures are wonderful. All are beautiful but I am especially smitted with Burgundy Iceberg's unique color. I love your petunias too, those rich jewel tones with the white accents.

You have the loveliest collection of roses, and they are especially nice with droplets of water. It is terribly disappointing when plants are not as expected, I don't know why they enhance colour, it only leads to disappointed customers.

GRACE PETERSON said...

I agree. If there was some way to get the winter months to whiz by like the summer months do...

I had Bonica years ago and it was a deeper pink than your rose is. In fact it was exactly like the photos depicted. I think you got a mislabeled rose and should alert Wayside. JMHO.

Love your chair-frog vignette.

Lona, I had big plans for transplanting and just general gardening, but our weather has different ideas, It is raining and I don't think it is supposed to let up today. I guess that means I will have to get the housework done Sighhhh!

Oh Lona dear, we share a love of the roses, don't we? I appreciate your honest opinion of which roses do well or not. I have a few that I'm not quite thrilled with, but I just can't bear to tear them out. And I can't believe you have struggled with ajuga. Mine is about to take over the planet! You know neither one of us ever complain about the heat, do we? The only reason my penstemon is standing up is because I put a little piece of fence edging up in front of it.

I love newly redone bed. Isn't it funny sometimes after you move things around you wonder why you hadn't done it before. I love all your pretty roses! I think I have some new ones blooming, but it's raining again!! The rain has knocked down many plants and vines and I need to go tie them up.
I agree, why don't the winter months fly by as fast as spring? :)

I love burgundy iceberg. Such a beautiful colored rose. Sorry to hear your disappointed in Bonica. I often see darker blooms as the season progresses. My fall blooms are the darkest...

Lona, I just had to post an update, as the strangest thing has happened. I was out pruning and deadheading the roses two days ago and what did my tired eyes see but a spring of dark pink buds on the otherwise pale pink blooming Bonica!

I checked again yesterday and they opened medium pink in the morning but by the time I got out to photograph later in the day, they were as pale as the others.

I am wondering if bright sun has something to do with it? I'll be seeing a lot of the members of the rose society chapter I belong to this weekend... I'm going to ask.
