My First Helleborus Bloom

First thanks for all of the sympathy and back patting. It made me feel all better. LOL! Losing the potting bench was not all that bad and forgive my silly sense of humor. I can always build another one someday, or on second thought maybe I better buy one since my building talents do not seem to be very good.

When I spotted my first bud on the “Royal Heritage” hellebore last week I was so excited. I was holding my breath that something would not happen to the bud before it got a chance to bloom.
Then we got two inches of snow and it disappeared from sight.

Well it warmed up and rained all of the snow off so I went out to see if the bud was alright. Lo and behold there it was and all opened up.  I was so  excited about the new bloom that I went right back into the house and got the camera. I was not going to wait for better light to get a picture of its little drooping head because my luck this week was not up to snuff.

Hellebore_First
It does not take much to perk this gardener up though and my first Hellebore bloom almost made up for the destroyed potting bench. well almost. LOL!
I have four mixed “Royal Heritage” hellebore plants that were very small when I planted them and this one is the first of them to have bloom so excuse me if I am thrilled about it. Just imagine how excited I would have been if it had been a burgundy colored one or pink even. LOL!

 Helleborus_PinkLady
I have one “Pink Lady”  that I was hoping to get a bloom from this winter but so far no buds.
I love having a bloom in the garden in the dead of winter and may add more later. There are so many beautiful ones coming out each year.
Do you have Hellebores in your Garden?

Happy Gardening,
Lona

Lona, I have some Hellebores in my garden, most have a bud on them, but really not as far along as yours. I love the pink one!!

I do have lots of hellebores, but they aren't even close to blooming, especially since they're getting buried by snow right now. Maybe in a month or two they'll start.
And your yellow header is just PERFECT for a yucky January day!

Hi Lona,

So glad you have your first Hellebore bloom; I don't think anyone can begrudge your excitement - I know I was excited to see mine! I believe I was giddy as a school girl, in fact :D

I've always admired hellebores but know they'd never survive in my hot dry garden. So exciting that you have a bloom--somewhere under the snow.

Sorry about the potting bench. I'm impressed you could have that at all. An average afternoon here would have wiped it out long ago. We get a little windy. That's why I'm move toward iron pieces in the garden. Heavy stuff.

Hi Lona.
This weather has been crazy lately. I just left Dublin and it was barely spitting any snow, but about halfway home it started snowing hard, and the roads were slick.... Sunday is supposed to be in the 50's again.

I do not have any hellebores but I definitely enjoyed yours.

Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful thing to find in the garden! I would be thrilled to find a hellebore blooming. I don't have any, but Carolyn says I should be able to grow them here, so I'm considering giving them a try! Love the pink ones!

I've got to get me some helleborus. If they grow for you then they should grow for me. I'm not that many miles up the Ohio from you.
sorry about your potting bench. Even though it has been a warmer winter, we have had some pretty big winds.

I'm sorry to hear about your potting bench being destroyed, but at least you have a hellebore bloom to console you. Thanks for friending my new blog, I've given up on recovering the other. Google has the worst customers service EVER.

Your Hellebores are far ahead of mine now. Now mine are the ones buried under snow. I have 'Royal Heritage' and they'll probably all be different colors. They are also really good at reseeding.

Ah, the first Hellebore, I can relate! I get so excited when they start to show their little faces and look how gorgeous your one is!

Lona girl I will have to back track and see what happened to your bench ? .. And look at this bloom !!!
I am totally jealous .. I am worried about my hellebore because of the odd weather and being in a raised bed .. issues with dry soil and what not .. I will be holding my breath to see if I have any blooms to capture with my camera .. yours is lovely girl !

Wow...that's awesome. Mine never bloom that early. I love them but they are quite expensive. Especially some of the newer species.

I have never wanted hellebores, before today. Really, they bloom this early?? I will surely have to check that out, I could use an early bloomer!

Oh how wonderful to have any kind of a bloom in the garden. I am so ready to see one in mine. Enjoy!

Lona,
I love these 'green' hellebore blooms and in January in Ohio never would have thought that would happen. We have 3 hellebores blooming one since November. I counted 19 others with buds including 3 doubles with buds.

Yes Lona, I have been growing hellebores and adding more each year. Right now I have 2 varieties blooming and several others have large buds. Some won't even get buds until March and will bloom even later. There are so many varieties and it's hard to know what will do well unless you try them. I've lost several already, either to critters, or just having planted in a location they didn't like. It's fun to experiment but can be expensive too...they don't usually come 'cheap'!! Congrat's on your first hellebore bloom, and I'm sorry to read about your potting bench...that's sad!

I am excited for you! I have several hellebores. I have only been checking the ones in the warmer spots. I should go around and see how the others are doing. So far, no flower buds.

I'm very partial to winter blooms. When the weather is bleak, and my eyes are colour starved, I'm checking the hellebore constantly looking for that first bloom.
Last year, we dint have ne blooms until january, this year... spotted the first bloom in November... N then I wuz reading a PA blog about autumn bloomers...
