The September Garden

I hope everyone is enjoying their extended weekend. With the Labor Day holiday and September comes the realization that Fall is beginning. A little sooner here this year I think with the leaves on the trees already getting a tinge of Fall colors.

Toadlily
September welcomes the blooming of the Toad lilies with their tiny speckled blooms.

The berries on the Callicarpa Purple Beauty Bush ‘Profusion’ turn a lovely purple color.

Caryopteris_FirstChoice2
Caryopteris Blue Mist shrub ‘First Choice’ starts opening its beautiful tiny blooms. The bees always love this shrub.

A few more roses throw up some blooms here and there.

 Rose_CrimsonBouquet_Aug  Crimson Bouquet Rose

Crimson Bouquet is the sweetest rose for fragrance and I would grow it for that reason alone. It also means it is time to dry those last blooms for potpourri for winter.

Rose_SkysLimit_Aug Sky’s The Limit Climbing Rose

This climbing rose has bloomed all summer and is a welcome addition to the Rose Garden.

The month of September also means the beginning of the Fall Festivals around here. The first one my daughter and I always love to attend is the “Backwoods Festival” near Thornville, Ohio. The Backwoods Festival is one of the largest crafting display events in Ohio and begins Friday, September 14 at 10 a.m. and runs through Sunday September 16th.

BWF_Pumpkins

This is also where you can get your Fall decorating supplies and Christmas too.

BWF_Stonehouses
They also cater to the gardener with lots of wonderful ideas and garden decor.
September is when the daylight hours diminish faster and it is time to start planning for those bulbs you want to plant for next spring when you will be longing for color…. any color after a long winter.
So welcome September but I am not one of those gardeners who is glad to see you and the end of summer. I would just as well skip over you and go right into April again.
Everyone have a wonderful week ahead and……….
Happy Gardening,
Lona

I love fall festivals. Hope you find some goodies! I love that Ketchup & Mustard rose, what a color combination. What variety is your toadlily? I have Gilt Edge, would love another, like the one you have.

Fall festivals are so fun. Look at those pumpkins. I do love how some flowers revive as the temperatures cool and love the cooler mornings. Enjoy the holiday.

Fall is my favorite season, so I must say I am very excited for it! I love craft fairs as well - the festival there sounds like so much fun! For some reason the big local festivals here are in summer, and it's way too hot usually to go (or at least, to convince my husband to go!)

That's the same week-end as the COuntry Living Fair and the Springfield Antique and VIntage Fair. Can't believe they are all scheduled at the same time.
Do you know the name of the vendor with the houses. I have one of them and haven't been able to find her.
Did you get a good rain yesterday. your flowers are still beautiful.

Hi Lona, I'm with you, I could skip winter entirely, too! The sun seems to set so early now and just like that, boom,it's dark out. Thank you for the reminder to get some bulbs planted, I just wish I'd bought some, lol.

That fair looks fantastic, how I wish I lived closer. All those booths to visit and ideas, wow!

Lona,

Those roses are beautiful! My Toad lilies got a little scorched this summer and look like they have buds but they are not open yet. We have a lot of leaves falling already around town, mostly heat related I think.

I am already noticing the darkness when I go to work at 6:30 a.m. Hate that part of September, but love the rest. I am ready to but the garden to bed for the long winter.

My blue mist shrub is blooming, too. I need to check again, but I think I have a volunteer one. I walked by the area today, and thought that may be what it is, but I didn't stop for a closer look.

It's hard for me to believe it's September already. I think I'll join you in going right into April next.

Janet: The Toadlily came in a cheap mix of plants so I do not know what variety it is.

GardenerOSS: I always look forward to the fall festivals and looking at all of the crafts.

Nadezda: The Ketchup and Mustard rose has been a lovely new addition to the rose garden this summer.

Sharon: I love those little Toadlily blooms in the fall. They are different. LOL!

Cher: I love those blue blooms in last summer to. It is good to see a lovely blue like they have.

Indie: I am with you girl I love those craft festivals at any time of the year.

Debby: That is a shame that they are all on the same week. It may mean fewer crafters then at the Backwoods Festival.

Karen: I am glad I am not the only one who hates to see winter come. LOL! I will probably have to hold off on planting fall bulbs this years unless it is in some planters.

Satu: I have no luck with pumpkins either. I always plant the tiny ones for decoration and they always seem to die out on me in mid summer for some reason.

Eileen: Luckily my Toadlilies were planted in all shade and where I water a lot or mine would have been scorched this summer also.

Zoey: I think we all are tried of the gardens this summer. LOL!

Sue: That would be so great to have a volunteer come up. Lucky you girl. LOL!

SageButterfly: I always look forward to the fall festivals every year even though I hate to see summer come to an end.

Alistair: The link was free. Just go to the site to get your logo. I hate word verifications with a passion. Especially when people still monitor their messages anyway. I wish they would opt out of them. I have a hard time reading some of them. LOL!

Margy: Girl I know you would love this festival. So many crafts and good things to see. It is a shame you are not closer.

I really enjoy the fall festivals, so many good things can be found.

I can't get over that ketchup and mustard rose, amazing colors.
My blue mist shrub has been mistreated but it sure does flower beautifully anyways.
