Finally the Seeds are Sowed

Hello everyone. I hope you all have had a wonderful week.

Beige_March6_2013
We had a lot of rain this week that then turned into 3 inches of snow.

Blue_March6_2013

I have to say that even if I am tired of the snow and winter that this snowfall was a really pretty one.

Pines_March6_2013
It was one of those wet snows that clings to everything, the kind that makes great snowmen.

What_Snow
Aspen enjoyed running and playing in it. I think he ended up with more on his nose than anywhere else. LOL!

CockelBurrs_March6_2013
Even the sticky Cockleburs looked pretty in the snow. With the temperatures rising fast that day it was all about melted off by evening.

Seed_Starting
The seeds I had ordered arrived yesterday so this morning I was excited to get started on sowing them.

Seed_Starting2
I got them all started now but I feel so far behind getting them started this year. I debated too long on whether to even start any this year. So I am afraid they will not be very big by the time it comes to fill those containers and window boxes.
I usually like to get my seeds started in February.
A few veggies and some more impatiens seeds to sow and then I will be finished with them. Now if they all just germinate and grow strong Some years they do good and others not so much.

It felt good to be playing in the dirt again while picturing  in my mind what those flowers from them will look like this summer.

Another thing gardeners. Do you get these looks thrown at you, you know the ones, when you ask the teenage associate in the Home Improvement store where the grow lights are kept.
I have to throw in real fast and mention that I need them for starting my flower seeds indoor for the summer planting.
They look at you and grin and you can almost read their minds and that smirked little grin.
I do not think they believe me. LOL!
I do not think I will ever ask someone again for help locating them.
But then the check out lady gives you the same look when leaving. What is a gardener to do?
Sad when you cannot even grow seeds in your home without the neighbors wondering what you are growing with all those lights on.

Everyone have a great weekend and

Happy Gardening,

Lona

Lona, you are so good! I am feeling bad that I didn't start any seeds this year. Maybe, I still have time, blaming Duffy for a major lifestyle change.

Aspen is so cute! I am going to look in the catalog right now for something different.

you are certainly ambitious with your seeds, and I like the 'grow light' set up you have. Wasn't this snow gorgeous? Just hope that it was the last. Warmer temps next week, but everything is so muddy. I may have to wait a little longer to get out and start cleaning up. Have a great weekend.

You seed pots look so good. Very inspiring to see them under your new grow lights. Too funny about asking for help finding them. Enjoy the sprouts when they show up.

You really have a lot of pots started Lona. Planting those out will keep you busy enough. Aspen seems to be enjoying himself. They do love to play in the snow.

O Lona, Aspen looks so pretty with snow on his nose. I know what you mean when you come into a shop and ask for something unusual for youngsters. I had something like this too and they looked at me as if I was totally crazy.
My experience with sowing is that there is almost no difference in sowing in early February or March, seedlings germinated later in time grow faster.

Thanks for the morning giggle, Lona. You sure are ambitious! Look at all those cute little pots, waiting for the seedlings to sprout!

I have this week off, so better get some tomatoes and peppers started. Mexican sunflowers are probably the only flower I'll start this year.

Super post Lona!
I started only 8-10 week before last frost free date early stuff indoors this week, lettuce, brocc, eggplant, strawberries, pars, onion. I cleared out the cold frame and put a wireless therm and was shocked to get 75 degrees suring the day and 30 at night, the highs here in Chicago are only 40! Ill get it cleared out and rough up the soil to plant some lettuce out in the frame this weekend!

Lona girl you have given me such a great laugh this morning about the "grow op ? lights" hahahaha!
Now no need to be shy about it girl .. I totally understand .. wink giggle snort ... I also understand how it must feel to be playing with the dirt .. we do go through some terrible withdrawal during the winter don't we ?
Hope all those little seeds grow up to be beautiful flowers for you!!

That's too funny about the grow lights...lol. Yes I could see them doing that for sure.

My friend had a mercury light in her condo bedroom for her orchid's...the neighbours were always whispering.

Very funny about the grow lights. Trust a teenager to put this sort of spin on things. You put me to shame. I haven't started a single seed. Spring is still 4-6 weeks away or at least that is my excuse. Have a great week Lona!

Loved your winter pics. i know my maltese het covered with snowballs in the winter. I thought i would mention, you dont really have to go to the expense of a growlight if you dont want to. Cheap shoplights work just as well, and they run 10-12 dollars each and then about another 7 for the two bulbs. I also recently fixed up a large light using eve cheaper florescent bulbs. I am a bit of a tightwad, lol Here is link to my new light:

Yours is a nice setup with the shelves of grow lights (where ever you find them.!!)

That is too funny about the grow lights. Let them think what they want - you know better. You are doing good getting them started indoors. My seeds just came in this past week and I will be direct sowing. If it doesn't make it by direct sowing I will buy a plant. Actually I have ordered quite a bit of plants too. Can't wait to see everyones blooms.

I'm with you Lona, I didn't start a single seed indoors this year. They just struggle! Instead, I saved up my pocket cash over the winter so I can buy plants. I have enough good nurseries around here, and can usually find almost everything I need. Now I bought a lot of seeds, don't get me wrong. But only the easy starters, like cucumbers, sunflowers, etc.
