What Happened To My Roses????

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe extended weekend.

As I hinted to in a previous posting I have a real mystery
going on with my roses this year.

This is my Irish Gold Rose bushes from last summer.
A beautiful yellow rose that I just adored. I have it beside
my garage on a long bed along with other rose bushes.
Because I loved it so well I have a second one just like
it on the other side of the garage in another long bed.

I leave the tagging slips on the rose bushes just in case
someone forgets the names of them (not me, ahem).

Now look at my beautiful Irish Gold Rose bush this year!

Notice anything different???

I do not know what happened to the beautiful yellow rose
that was here. The tag is still there that says Irish Gold but
she looks an awful lot like the Ebb Tide roses that are planted
beside her. I check the other beautiful yellow roses on the
other side of the garage and---- yes, they look an awful lot like
the red Ebb Tide rose also.

I am flabbergasted as to what happened.
It did not effect the other roses that are planted there just
the Irish Gold bushes.

As you may be able to see from the picture the Ebb Tide rose
runs across the side of the garage on top of the once yellow
rose bush that is suppose to be on the trellis.
Could pollination have changed the yellow rose bush to red?
Then what explains the one clear on the other side of the garage
and why did it not affect my other roses?
I am not a rose expert so I am stumped.

Now I have this great array of red roses along beside and on the
garage, which is alright but I would still rather have the yellow
roses with it.

I am training the Ebb Tide rose bush on the left to climb
all along the side of the garage but it looks like now it will
get some help from the mysterious yellow turned cloned
look alike on the trellis at the right.
I have two bushes on either side of the Ebb Tide that
have not bloomed as yet and now I am wondering if
the Lasting Love and Lavender Simplicity will look
a lot like the Ebb Tide also. I hope not!!
Strange story but true.

They are still beautiful. Could the problem be that the main rose died out and the other one took over that it was grafted to? That's what happened to mine once. While I was down sick a helpful neighbor asked if she could prune it for me and boy did she ever prune. Just left one stem way at the bottom. Bascially what she did was cut all the rose off and just left a three inch stem which was the graft the other one was grafted to. It put out the next year as a different kind of white rose but it was a running one. The first one was a bush one which I liked much better. Helen

Is the red rose coming up from the roots? Could it be that the yellow rose graft died and the red rose is the root stock? Just a thought. I don't know about the Irish Gold rose but you could dig it up and take it back to the nursery where you bought it. Maybe they will replace it for you?(-: I hate when that happens in my garden!!!! Anyhow your Ebb Tide is beautiful!!!!

Gloria, thanks for dropping by. It is a mystery.

Cindee, I have had the rose for three years and it was always yellow. Cannot take it back now I am afraid.

Patsy & Helen; you girls probably hit on the answer. It had died back so just maybe the graft was destroyed and the Ebb Tide took over the graft. The second bush is on the opposite side of the garage from this one so I don't know what its problem is.

Sometimes roses send out suckers beneath the graft and if left proliferate.

That is really strange. It does make sense that the graft may be the one blooming. I noticed that there is new growth coming up from the roots of my 'Iceberg' rose and now I'm waiting to see if it will be a different rose.

My day lilies were all a beautiful crisp white two years ago, then the second year everyone of them bloomed bright yellow, I am curious what they will be this year?
In terms of roses the grafting makes sense, but I do know now that the color of flowers can change!~Jacque

I agree with others that the graft probably died and the root stock took over. It is the only thing that explains it. Pollination could not have changed the color of your rose. Pollination can only make new plants from the seed and not change the entire plant. The plant could have also reverted but I don't think so because the parentage from what I found looks nothing like this. Sorry this happened to you...the only thing you can do is buy a new irish gold rose and start over. The reason the other might not have done the same is because you said it was on the other side of the house. It was probably more protected or did not freeze or die back as far leaving the graft on it.

I was voting for alien plant abductions, but more than likely it is just die back.

It is still very pretty.

You can call your rose 'Dr. Huey' now. It's a commonly used roostock. Here's a good page with pictures and more information: http://www.ph-rose-gardens.com/00704.htm.

Hi, Lona. I agree with Patsy and Helen. I had that happen before as well. Your roses are lovely! At our current home we have only a couple of fairy roses out front. I have a few places in the back with enough sun, but the deer are merciless. Can't imagine how they stand chewing the thorns! So my flowerbeds are mostly filled with so-called "deer-resistant" plants. Even those get chewed on occasionally.

Mysteries in the garden. Probably right about the graft. I think the garden area is so pretty....love the way you have trained the vines to follow along the building. I would leave it alone and maybe try another one somewhere else.

I am going with Patsy and Helen in this one...seems to be the only thing that makes sense.

Hi Lona - I have no idea what happened to the yellow rose. It sure was a pretty shade of yellow. Your roses are stunning and I love the ladder. Becca

that's beautiful no matter the color. Love how it's running around the side of the building. I don't know if you visited my older post, I have a yellow calla lily in my 3 year old pink calla bed!

I'm new to rose gardening - Had no idea this could happen. The comments were very informative.

Thanks!

Sure does look the graft took over. That's happening to my plum trees. It's still gorgeous. You have a lovely garden!

Does an Irish Gold Rose typically bloom the first season it was planted?
