An Afternoon Walk & Halloween

  Happy Halloween Everyone!
I am not really a Halloween person but  I
like to decorate a little for Fall.
I think it is really the changing things up
a little around the front porch and in the living
room.
Treat or Treat is over for us here. The little
goblins came Thursday evening.
We had a whopping ten children!
Well that is a lot for us since we live out in the
sticks and the children like going into the nearby
towns where they can get more candy in the time
allotted to them to bang on doors.
I had one eager little girl about beat the door
down ( it sounded like it anyway) before I got the
candy to the door. I was trying to hurry, I really was,
but I was tripping over the little stray kitten that I
brought in to keep it from getting run over or stepped
on which was exactly what I was trying not t do.
It was way faster than me and darting between
my feet on the way to the door.

Holloween_Card

I do like old post cards though of the holidays
with their colorful pictures and old sayings.

Halloweencard_Postcard2

My daughter and I did manage to get a good walk
Friday afternoon along the upper trail at Old Mans Cave.
Most of the leaves  were gone but the nuts and berries
were numerous on some of the trees and ground.

Fall2_Berries_PineNeedles
These little wild red berries were on some kind of
a ground cover growing across some mossy rocks
on the trail. I haven’t a clue when it comes to
berries after the leaves are gone  but I know
some of might know what it might be.

Fall2_BBerries

These berries were so dark they appeared black in color.

Fall_Grasses3

The native Goldenrods and Snakeroots blooms
have now faded and turned to fluffy seeds.

Fall_Bouquet

We stopped on the trail and watched as a little girl
that was walking with her mother and grandmother
was trying to get close to this Doe.

Fall_Doe

She got a lot closer to her than we thought she would.
They see so many people here  at Old Mans Cave
and in the campground above the trail that they
get more use to people being around them.
Many may even try to feed them at the camping sites.

Fall_Doe5

I love to watch the deer and the spotted fawns are
always so cute but I don’t like them in my flowers
and garden at all. This time of the year the  bucks
will be rutting on the trees and they can really
damage small fruit trees.

Fall_UpperTrail2

The upper trail is full of fallen leaves now that
crunched as we walked along it.
There were several people on the trail that we met.
And as we came out a new bride dress in white
and a groom were getting pictures taken with the
background of the cliffs and pines behind them.

Fall_Russet2

The air was crisp and cool and perfect for an
afternoon walk along the trail. It was much
nicer than when we walked it on the hot humid
days of this summer.

Fall_UpperTrail4

A few golden yellow leaves glowed as the sun
filtered through the pine trees.

Fall_Lookout

Looking out over the gorge at the lookout point the
only color now amongst the pines were the oak
leaves and a sycamore tree.

Fall_Oaks

Even the red leaves of this small oak were lovely,
scars and all, but ready to fall.

Fall_UF_Bridge3

But even with the rain we had gotten after the
storms on Tuesday it was still dry.
The upper fails under the bridge was just a trickle
and the rocks were covered with fall leaves.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe
weekend. Enjoying the Fall colors of the leaves
and pumpkins. Enjoying the corn mazes and taking
hayrides through the fields but as for me…….

Until Next Time,
Lona

Every year I buy a big bag of candy, and every year we get about 10 kids. They all go to our little downtown or churches now. So then I have to eat the candy because I wouldn't want it to go to waste :)
Looks like it was a perfect day for a walk and what a beautiful place for wedding pictures.

Hi Lona, Beautiful photos. I love the close up of the deer. I hope someone can ID the berries. The tiny red ones are barberry I know that. The other red ones almost look like wintergreen but the leaves aren't quite right. I'd be so tempted to dig up this little gem and take it home.

I'm with you. I'd rather not have sticks in my pants. Are we getting old and cranky? :)

What a lovely walk you had.
We don't have trick or treaters at all, no one wants to come way out here, walk across the bridge, and be greeted by flocks of chickens and geese.... well, that IS pretty scary. But it is a perfect for a Halloween atmosphere. Wish I could get the kids to come, I love to see their little costumes!

Beautiful photographs as always Lona and I love your Maxine cartoon, too funny! Ohio is looking beautiful this fall. What a wonderful lady to bring your little stray kitten in for safekeeping on your Halloween night, those ghosts & goblins can scare a wee kitty half to death! Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures and Happy Halloween! Deb

Well, you are quite lucky. We had around 400 trick-or-treaters by 8:30 tonight, at which time we ran out of candy, despite about 15 vehicles lined up still on our street. Trick-or-treating in a small town is unreal, and I'm pretty much fed-up with it. Anyway, those are lovely, peaceful scenes, which I am happy to see tonight. Love all that fall foliage and how awesome to see such friendly deer!

Lona, What a hysterical ending to your beautiful post! I love your old postcards too. Lovely wooded walk with your doe! I can try a guess at your berries. Maybe the first is partridge berry, the next a Viburnum(?) not one I have ever seen though and the last looks like a Barberry. I could have them all wrong but someone will know as you say. Whatever they are all of your photos are wonderful! The Oaks are all so lovely this time of year . . . their colors are more muted than those of the Maples, but I do love this last phase of fall colors equally. Your shot with the bridge is great . . . I hope you get more rain before winter. I enjoyed your walk very much. ;>)

That looks like such a pretty place for a fall walk. The trees may be nearing the end, but those berries sure are colorful.
This is my favorite time of year for taking walks. Our hot, humid summers keep me inside more than I would like to be.
Gotta love Maxine's wisdom :).
Happy Halloween.

I love all your fall shots! Almost everything is beautiful then, even spent blooms. The first, ground berry is wintergreen. Your sunny shots of your blooms are amazing! I can never get good shots of white flowers or sunny areas. Jean

Catherine: I know I like to see how they dress too. Some are so creative. Around here they are generally homemade and fun.

Grace: Thanks for some help on the berry ID. Old and Cranky ? Us!? LOL!

Deb: Ohio was beautiful this Fall but with dry weather the colors did not last long at all. Maxine is a hoot. LOL!

Jerri: Now I would come to your house for Trick or Treat but I would be leery of your geese maybe LOL!

FlowerLady: I am weening every drop of these warm days that we have left for certain.Have a lovely weekend!

FloridaGirl: 400!!! Oh, my! I can see where you would wonder about this whole Trick or Treat thing. LOL! They come to the smaller towns where they think the people are friendlier and get more candy. LOL!

Carol: Thanks for help with the berry ID. I need to learn these things if I am going to post about them I guess.LOL!The little girl was really enjoying the Doe and getting close.

Happy@Home: There seems to be so many berries and nuts this year and it has me thinking that nature knows something I do not. A bad winter? Ugh! LOL!

Eileen: We have some beautiful trails around here to walk on. Too many parks. LOL! But they are always changing with the seasons so it keeps walking fresh each time. Have a lovely weekend.

Balisha: There will probably be more of our walks because of the lack of flowers. I hope everyone will not get bored. LOL!

Such fabulous photographs, Lona. But I love the old postcards, too, and of course the cartoon (isn't her name Maxine?) is just hilarious. Glad you had a lovely day...hope there are many more despite the coming of NOvember...

Lona said...

Jodi: I like that NOvember.I am not looking forward to cold weather at all.

Robin:It does have its pretty spots.

Patsy: The Maxine cartoons are so funny sometimes.Sometimes I wish I was as spunky as that cartoon character.LOL!

Jean:i have an awful time taking pictures of white and pink flowers in the sun. The angle has to be just right away from the sun which I forget so much of the time until after I see the pictures. Have a wonderful weekend.

What a lovely walk through the woods. It looks so peaceful and calming. Even the doe seemed to quite at ease.

Lovely pictures! That little bit of blurred movement in the background adds an extra dimension.
