This has been such a cold Spring here so far. I was wondering where my garden was this time last year so I went back to last years postings to take a comparison.
At this time last year Diana Clare Pulmonaria was already blooming where they are just now starting to grow and no buds are in sight so far this spring.
Tulips were in bloom in the Woodland bed.
The tulips are coming up and I noticed one bud yesterday while spraying them to keep the deer at bay.
The Rhododendrons were budding out.
This year the buds have not even fattened out.
Ornamental and fruit trees were in bloom and the old fashioned lilac bushes were budding out.
There are no buds yet on the lilacs and the neighbor’s beautiful tree has no blooms.
Wild Spring Beauty’s were in bloom all over the yard along the woods. There were also so many daffodils and hyacinths in bloom in the beds.
The only wild flowers that I have even spotted this spring so far were the Coltsfoot on a walk along the trail at Old Man’s Cave park last week.
So we are really behind in the blooming and gardening this year. No wonder Ohio gardeners are getting cranky and so annoyed at not being able to get out in the garden beds. LOL!
These blogs are wonderful to keep records of what is happening or not happening in your gardens from year to year. So you wonderful gardeners in the southern states over look us grumpy northern gardeners and keep posting those beautiful new Spring blooms to help us get through this cold spell until our gardens come into bloom.

Things are behind in my garden too but with the warmer days of April, [so far, knock on wood] it looks like they're quickly catching up. It's interesting how gardening and weather watching go together. The weather definitely affects the mood of the gardener. For sure.

Was last year warmer than normal for you? The differences you are describing between this season and last years are very striking. We have been in a La Nina weather pattern and it's keeping temperatures cooler than average with a spring forecast that is not promising. Hi Lona,
We had a similar situation last year, where Spring bulbs were few and far between until March/April and here we are this year with the total opposite and extremely early blooms starting way back in January.
I hope spring arrives for you soon and the white stuff well and truly disappears.
Wow - what a difference a year makes! You have a lot of beautiful things and I sure do hope spring comes quickly for you so you can enjoy the blooms in real time.
I, too, have noticed lots of differences in my garden from last year to this. The weather is kooky! I hope spring comes for you northern gardeners soon. I can understand your being a little anxiously annoyed!
Hi Lona, things are the same around here, too, we are way behind last spring's progress and had another dusting of snow this morning. The early returning migratory birds are really sorry they came back so soon; they're all sitting around looking very grumpy, too. It's so nice to see your flowers from last year, how beautiful your garden was then...and will be again; we're all just getting sick of the snow.
I remember that we had a very early spring last year and was very warm from the get go except for Mother's day when we had snow.
I know it is hard to be patient. I have been looking at the dates on some of my pictures from last year and we are behind several weeks. V
Good idea to compare last year to this year's spring progress. A great way to keep track one year to the next.

What's that saying about better late? It's hard when things take longer than you'd wish, but I know your garden will be beautiful in no time. Hope that cold weather takes a holiday soon! Loved those gorgeous Pulmonaria form last April!
I'm doing some of the same comparisons this year as we had the unusual cold last year. 3 weeks ahead of last year for the most part here. Though some plants, its interesting, don't seem to change at all though, as if the level of daylight, and not the heat that spurs them into being.

I need to go back and take a look. I do know my Rhodies were in full bloom on April 16, not going to make it this year!

It is fun to have a look back and compare exact dates. Each year is a little different. Really enjoyed seeing all those pretty photos from last April.
I don't mean to rub salt on your gardening wounds but it has been so warm here since February it is hard to imagine the great difference in climate. I'm sure you are going to warm up quickly when you do and your garden will catch up.
You can visit me as often as you like to fend off the 'grumpies'. :-)

We are grumpy here in CT too - looking at last year's pictures as you do shows how far behind we are. People are saying that last spring was very early, making the cold all the more difficult to take now.
Hang in there Lona, your plants will play catch up soon.
My new Rhododendron has one big bud and some small ones but no color yet.

A week or so ago, I looked back at some photos from last year. I think it was hellebores I was checking on. It seems like we are a week or so behind last year.
Soon, we will have lots more going on.
It's the same here, Lona. Last year, spring was about three weeks early, so I guess we'll be there soon!
