Friday Blooms

September came in hot, hot, hot. With highs in the 90’s the next few days the hint of fall and cooler mornings has disappeared for a while. After this Holiday weekend things will get back into the normal temps with highs in the 70’s.
Time to tear into some of the flowerbeds and make some moves from all of those notes.

Fertilizer_Friday

I am joining in on Fertilizer Friday with our hostess Glenda at  “Tootsie Time”.
Join us in “Flaunting Your Flower's”.

Some of the things  that are blooming in the garden now are:

CrapeMyrtle_Aug31

The Crape Myrtle bush is still heavy with blooms.

LordBaltimore_Hibiscus2_Aug31
The “Lord Baltimore” hibiscus is still putting on a few blooms.

LBHibiscus_Ragged
But just look at those sad chomped leaves. Something is really eating at them but I see nothing on them in the daytime so do Earwigs eat the leaves at night?

NewBed_Sept

The new purple “Wine & Roses” Weigela bush planted this summer is putting on some new growth.

NuBlue_Petunia I finally got tired of looking at the embarrassing planters this week and pulled all of the petunias. The only one that was left was this “NuBlue” petunia.  Sad and spindly now but I like the color.

Pelargonium_AppleBlossom
The “Apple Blossom” pelargonium survived the thinning out.

Rebrandt2D The “Rembrandt” Dahlia is looking better with these later blooms since they have been free of those chomping insects.

RadSunny2_Knockout_Aug RADSunny Knockout is still cranking out the blooms.

 Caryopteris2_FirstChoice
Caryopteris Blue Mist Shrub “First Choice” is starting to bloom and though it is still small it is full of blue buds.
The blue cellar door behind it makes its blue blooms look even bluer.

Coleus_WizardScarlet
Some late sowed Coleus “Wizards Scarlet” is starting to grow fast now. The scarlet centers in the leaf should take over most of the leaf as it grows leaving just a green edging on them.

Burgundy “Burgundy Iceberg” Roses are blooming again. They are a deeper color now than when they were in early summer.

Caladium_Sept The Caladiums are filling out nicely now.

Flamingo_Sept “Pink Flamingo” roses are still putting on blooms.

DoubleKnockout_Red_Aug31  Double Red Knockout rose.

Anemone_Bumblebee
Anemone “Queen Charlotte” is attracting the pollinators.

Gaillardia_Bug Gaillardia Mesa Yellow

Please remember those in Vermont who are struggling so much now with the destructive flooding from hurricane Irene with aide and prayers.
I wish you all a wonderful and safe Holiday weekend.

Happy Gardening,
Lona

Beautiful as usual. You know you can cut the petunias back by half and get a whole new flush of flowers and foliage. The Hibiscus probably has thos teeny weeny light green worms on the underside of the leaves. It took me forever to find them on mine last year.

I agree on the Petunia, it may be spindly, but that color is a knockout! I adore Anemones...so graceful!

This garden tour is simply delightful! Everything is so beautiful. I'm glad to hear you still have the energy to tackle that to-do list. The cool month of September is a goodie for wrapping up those final chores. :)

Lona, that burgundy rose is stunning, never have seen this color. I have had three great petunias this year, Bubblegum, Bordeaux and Tidal Wave. Also, the million bells petunias do a great job until the end also.

Like you, I yanked the rest. I too have had luck with Caladiums even in the heat.

There's still so much beauty to be found in your garden. The Hibiscus is stunning. The Caladiums are wonderful, and I just love the Apple Blossom Pellie! The colour of those 'NuBlue' Petunias is gorgeous, as is the deep rich hue of 'Burgundy Iceberg'. It's lovely to hear you're expecting cooler temp after the hot start to this month.

Hi Lona...I have those same petunias...I have loved them all summer, but mine were spindly too. I cut them back a while ago and they are coming back slowly.
Aren't there some beautiful coleus now days? I have one...I think it's called sienna, that is so pretty and huge.I love the colors.
Won't it be nice to have everyday cooler, so we can just take our time and really enjoy gardening? Have a nice weekend.

I always have a problem with container grown petunias getting past June. However the ones that volunteer do well in regular soil. go figure.

Amazing! The color on those petunias is intoxicating! My crape myrtles are still blooming but the hurricane blew off most of the petals. I have one hibiscus that is doing very well...yours are beautiful!

You have so many beautiful blooms! I am sorry about the heat, and hope it ends soon. Your hibiscus blooms are lovely, even with the lacy leaves :)

I'm jealous of you and your pretty pink Crape. Mine doesn't even have buds! I love your hibiscus and that Coleus is outstanding. Earwigs, indeed do their chomping during the night. I hope you can get them buggers before they do any more damage. Have a great weekend.

You've got some wonderful blooms still going on. Most of mine have just keeled over from the heat and drought. I, too, finally pulled and pitched my petunias. They plumb tuckered out. Beautiful photos.
