Friday In The Garden

I well post more on the Garden Show later but for now I wanted to put up a posting on what is going on out in the garden and also indoors for a record.
The reports tonight of deaths in Indiana today from the storms are just heartbreaking. Severe storms are all around us this evening and thunder is rolling as I write this posting. I am praying everyone will be alright and come safely through the storms tonight.

Rose_Sprouts_March2

In a walk around the yard earlier I was surprised to see the roses are showing signs of growth. This is just too early for us here in Ohio.

Tulips_March2
Some of the tulips are getting nearer to putting on some buds while others are just peeking through the ground. So I should have tulips blooming in stages if I can keep the deer from eating them.

Daffodils_March2

It is the same with the daffodils. Some of the early blooming ones have buds on them while others are just half grown.

Crocus_Stunted

The purple crocuses I planted are yellow and they look terrible. They are all mushy and stunted. Terrible!

Heath_Blooms_March2

There are a few little blooms left on the Heath along the garage bed tiers.

Hellebore_March2

The Royal Heritage hellebores have put on more blooms.

Hellebores_March2

Meanwhile indoors….WranglersDixie_Violet

The Wranglers Dixie African Violet is putting on its first blooms for me. I have been trying to be patient waiting for it to get large enough to bloom.

IMG_0014 The seeds sowed indoors are starting to grow nicely now.

Seedlings_March2 I love cutting up old blind slats to make plant markers. The wooden ones tend to get water soaked messing up the names on them and sometimes they mold for me. With the blinds there is not that problem.
So it is looking like spring here indoors and outdoors.
Everyone have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

Happy Gardening,
Lona

Look at all those seedlings! That reminds me to go check on mine. It's so fun to watch how quickly they sprout and grow.
Our weather is all over the place right now, the plants don't know what to do. I pruned my roses and then it snowed the next day, oops :)

I saw where the storms were south of you. Hope they missed you. Not bad here.....just rain and thunder. Those poor towns in Indiana and in Alabama.....my brother and his family live there. Last year they had a tornado in the same town near them.

Love seeing your little seedlings!!!

I am also worried for the plants that are starting to bud. It's just too early and it's so hard to protect everything when we get those hard freezes.

You have been busy with all those seeds. We used to use mini blinds cut for plant labels when I worked in the Learning Garden in Virginia.
These storms are really frightening. I hope there is no more death and destruction.
That is a beautiful African Violet.

Lona, your garden is well on its way to spring.
I, too, am concerned about the tornadoes and hope everyone is safe. I live in California and have lots of blog friends and relatives in the tornado hit areas.

Hi,

Look at all those seedlings! That's an impressive amount, Lona :)

Our Roses are growing too, and I'm a bit concerned they may be damaged if we get a cold snap again - I haven't even managed to cut them all back yet!

Have a great weekend

Everything seems to be coming along nicely Lona (except for the crocus of course) you will soon be up to your neck in transplanted seedlings by the look of it. Have a nice weekend

Your seedlings look great. I notice that you have gerbera seedlings. These I have never tried, are they hard to start? They are one of the few things not in my seed stash, LOL.

Lona we have been hearing in the UK of the dreadful storms in Indiana. All is looking well in your garden, pity about the purple Crocus, take care.

Spring really is ready to bloom for you. That Violet is gorgeous. Well worth however long it took to bloom. I could look at that blooming everyday and still enjoy it.

Yes the storms were horrible as were all the deaths. I heard one down your way. We were spared most of it thankfully. Have a nice weekend.

I am loving seeing things start to grow but some of them are just too early.I hope this new cold spell does not last long.

Yes they were just thirty miles below us and I was keeping an eye out. Scary evening.

Lona said...

I know they are nothing to look at but I am always excited to see them sprout. LOL!

Lona said...

It is worrisome when you know we are going to get some really cold weather yet. I hope it does not kill the buds on some of the shrubs.

The blooms on the violet is the same color as the variegation's so it is hard to detect on the plant.

March has sure come in like a lion throughout the states this year. My heart goes out to those who had lost everything.

Lona said...

I hope everything comes through this silly weather Liz.Maybe it is just as well that you have not cut your roses back yet.

Lona said...

I well be busy transplanting them into bigger pots soon. Another chance to play in the dirt. LOL!

Ed these germinated really fast and easily for me. I had tried them once before from seeds I had gotten on Ebay and I could get none of the seeds to germinate so I was apprehensive at trying them again but it must have been bad seeds before. Give them a try Ed.

That is really telling when the storms were so bad that you heard about it in the UK.One town in Indiana was wiped clear out with many deaths. It is just heartbreaking. The garden is one its way.

It was really bad weather just below us last night. Terrible to face this stuff this early in the season. I guess March came in like a lion Cher.

We are so far behind you this year. Plants have not even popped out of the ground yet. I do have indoor violets blooming like crazy though. I am so surprised to see you almost have the daffs blooming. We are going to hit almost 60° on Thursday, but that is two days after it will be 25°. I think plants are afraid to poke out of the soil for fear of what the next days will be like.

We had a frost and cold wind this morning.

Your plants may be better off if their afraid to poke their heads out. I am afraid some of my plants are going to pay for it.

We have snow flurries today Patsy so winter is still showing us who is boss. LOL!
