It Is All About the Rhododendrons

I wanted to share some pictures of the two Rhododendrons bushes that are blooming in my garden now.
These two big beauties grow between the house and the garage and they are stealing the show from everything else starting to bloom now.

Rhododendrons_May6 Viewed here from the back they do not look all that big but the lavender one is over twenty feet and the red one is nearing twelve feet now.  As you can see from the picture below the lavender one reaches up above the upstairs widow on the house.

They have been growing here for many years now and I always look forward to seeing those big round balls of blooms each spring.

With the rains moving in over night and into this morning the blooms are starting to fall off now and it is sad to see them going so fast.

Both of the bushes were loaded with blooms this year and after they are finished it will be time to trim back a few of the branches that rub against the house and are growing out into the pathways.

I had a yellow “Capistrano” Rhododendron that has been dying for a few years. Nothing I seemed to do to it help to bring it back around. This winter it finally died clear out so I had to dig it up.

I have another small red Rhododendron in the woodland bed but something eats it and strips the leaves down every year and it has not had a chance to bloom since the first year I planted it. Frustrating to be sure but when the deer get hungry they will eat anything.

Rhododendron_First But this is the first year that the Rhododendrons have bloomed along with the roses.
With everything blooming so early this year it makes me want to put out a lot of annuals this year because I fear we are going to run out of blooms this summer.
The lilies are starting to bud here and it looks like all of the lilies will be finished blooming before the yearly Lily Fest that is held locally in July this year.

Everyone enjoy your day and….
Happy Gardening,
Lona

Lona, So beautiful!!! You would be horrified if you saw my one, very sad rhododendron! It failed to perform for the first few years and what did I do? Did I nurture it or treat it to a little fertilizer? No! I banished it to the back of the garden where it leads a neglected, lonely existence. Poor thing! I am surprised it hasn't applied for American citizenship and headed down to stay in your garden! LOL Do you have any secrets that I should use to try to make it up to my Rhododendron?

What great, beautiful bushes! One of my lilies has started blooming already, and the rest have buds. I hope this mild winter doesn't lead into a crazy hot summer...

Very pretty Rhodies, Lona. The lilies are not yet blooming here and roses are on their way. This weather has been great for long bloom times.

With so many having problems with rhododendrons, yours are thriving just beautifully. The various colors are just gorgeous.

I don't think there is anything as pretty as mature shrubs when they are flowering. Love those rhodies.

Your Rhodies are so spectacular. You should be mighty proud. Too bad we can't plant them in the Tropics.

There they are! I'm always so pleased to see your "roadies" in bloom! I have two small shrubs, and they don't bloom much. But yours are something else. Wow!
