Rejuvenation in the Summer Garden

Recent rains and cooler weather here in the hills have caused a rejuvenation to some of the flowers and to this gardener.
The cooler temperatures have felt so good after such a hot summer.

Anemone_QueenCharlotte

The ‘Queen Charlotte’ Japanese anemones are starting to bloom
now but their leaves are gone from the hungry Blister Beetles.

Anemone_QueenCharlotte_BB
I am seeing new growth on the rose bushes in the Rose Garden so I am looking forward to seeing some new rose blooms.

Crape_Myrtle_Aug14
The Crape Myrtle bush at the corner of the garage is loaded down with blooms here in the middle of August.

CrapeMyrtle_bloom

 Angelonia_Aug
This is the first summer I have planted Angelonia in the containers and it will not be the last. It has been in constant bloom.

Scaevola_FanFlower_Aug
Scaevola or Fan Flower was another new container plant in my garden this summer and I have loved its constant blooms. It is cascading over the old washtub container.

Snapdragon_BronzeDragon

“Bronze Dragon’ snapdragons grown from seeds are pretty but it is the dark foliage that I really love about this snapdragon.

Gerbera_Red Gerbera Daisies also grown from seed are blooming in an array of colors. From red…..

Gerbera_Orange_Aug
to a brilliant orange….

Gerbera_Kettle to yellow ones grown in an old teakettle.

Dahlia_Rembrandt_Aug
The dahlias have done terrible this summer. Of the bulbs I planted only one is blooming. ‘Rembrandt’ was a hold over from last summer. But two other new bulbs planted this summer are not blooming and look to be dying for some reason.

Dahlia_BB
The Redskin Dahlias grown from seed are doing much better than the bulbs have.

Goldenrod_LittleLemon ‘Little Lemon’ goldenrod is a dwarf and new to the garden this year. It is starting to open its buds now.

Lobelia_Red_CardinalFLower2

The bright spot in the garden now is the bright red blooms on the Cardinal Flowers.

Ligularia
While along the woodland bed there are Yellow blooms from the Ligularia seeds and plants Jim & Pat @ Pat and Jims Gardening Adventure, local Buckeye gardeners.

 Phlox_BrightEyes_Aug
‘Bright Eyes’

Some of the tall phlox plants still have a few blooms left but even they are about finished now.

Phlox_NoraLeigh_Aug

‘Nora Leigh’ is a lovely variegated tall phlox.

Phlox_David_Aug ‘David’s White’ phlox has the strongest fragrance.

Centaurea_Bachelors_Buttons
Along the woods wild centaurea or Bachelor Buttons are blooming.

While some of the plants are showing some new growth now it seems most of the flowers are finishing up for this year. With such an early and a very hot summer everything has bloomed and is starting to fade all too fast.

How is your garden standing up to such a hot summer?

Happy Gardening,
Lona

Piękne kwiaty masz teraz w ogrodzie, a krzew rosnący obok garażu jest śliczny. Pozdrawiam.
Now you have beautiful flowers in the garden, a shrub growing next to the garage is pretty. Yours.

Hi Lona,

Lovely; I'm glad you've got some much needed rain and cooler temperatures :)

I am really glad seeing all your blooms. They are really pretty. They certainly brings a smile on my face. Although, I'm doubting if my plants will survive the heavy rain. It's been raining for days.

I'm so glad the weather has cooled for you Lona. Your Queen Charlotte is the exact same color as your blog's wallpaper. Did you plan that? :) And your pink Crapey...ooh, la, la!! I grew a pink (of course) Angelonia a few years ago. Since then I haven't been able to find it at any nursery. I was really impressed with it though.

Phlox really shines this time of year doesn't it? Hoping to add more to my collection this fall.
So you grew your Gerbera daisies from seed?? Did you harvest the seed from other daisies?? I have some out front from which I could collect the seeds. May have to give it a try.

Lona girl I am so glad not to have had those beetles .. yet ? .. my anemone have lots of nice buds on them so I am hoping to see some pretty flowers .. I do have a bit of black spot going on with the rose strip .. I hate that stuff !
The Black Eyes Susans have really carried the garden through the terrible heat and drought .. they keep shining through it all.
I have loads to do in my gardens but I have to work up to actually doing it ! LOL
Yours looks wonderful girl !

Happy for you to have the rejuvenation Lona. It's cooler here today but we are STILL waiting for some rain... :(

You have some gorgeous flowers considering the heat. My anemones aren't blooming yet but I did just buy a single pink one ~ looks a bit deeper color than your lovely shade. Hope it does well, I had to plant it in a different spot because the white ones are so aggressive they don't "allow" newcomers!
p.s. The tulips you were trying to locate on my blog ~ were they the doubles?? Maybe 'sensual touch' or 'charming beauty??' I think there was a double pink called 'foxtrot??' too?? I hope I'm remembering the names correctly. They are probably under my April posts which shouldn't be that hard to go thru since I haven't been blogging as much this year. Good luck ~ I hope you get some gorgeous ones.

You have a lot of beautiful flowers in bloom! Black blister beetles always eat my anemones too.

That's funny Lona, I just put up the same kind of post, about how the better weather is helping the garden improve! My seeded dahlia's are doing better than the tubers too. No blooms yet, but almost! I've never grown them from seed before.

Dear Lona, it was so wonderful to find you....I finally have a name for my anemones...Queen Charlotte. The original plant was gifted to me by my elderly Aunt over 20 years ago and now it has quite beautifully taken over an entire bed, mixed in with hydrangeas and ivy! It is a favorite of mine.
She did not garden by name, only what she wanted to grow!
Your blog is full of information and general notes of interest, but I especially love your quote above the comment form, lovely. n.xo

Hi Lona, I have never heard of blister beetles before. I looked back into your last post and those skin welts look terrible. I puff up from mosquito bites, so I can just imagine what would happen if one of those little guys got hold of me.
On the positive side, I think that your Crape Myrtle is simply stunning! Your first dahlia image is also especially nice. I also like the fan flower. I haven't seen that one before.

My dahlias all rotted over winter so I bought new tubers and they vanished too - - oh well, there's always next year.

Great post, the ‘David’s White’ phlox looks like a winner. I have never grown Phlox. Is it easy to grow?
