Friday in the Garden

Hot and dry weather has set in here in the hills and that means dragging around the water hoses. Quite a difference from last year when we only had to water the gardens a few times. From the looks of it this may be one dry summer ahead.

Lilybed2_June14
The lily bed in the woodland garden is starting to bloom now and it is becoming a riot of orange, pinks, whites and yellows from the of Asiatic lilies planted in this section.

Lilybed_June14

In the woodland bed it is always a challenge each year to keep the deer from eating the lilies. I use garlic clips hanging along a string line around the bed and deer spray repellants. They still nip off a few even with these deterrents.

Lily_Elodie_Asiatic
This pink double is ‘Elodie’ and Asiatic lily that I always look forward to seeing each year. The plants are finally starting to spread out in their third year and the bed looks fuller.

Also in the woodland bed I have scattered many wild flower seeds. Many daisies and coneflowers are coming up there.

CoreopsisNative_LanceLeaved
This native Lanced leaved Coreopsis is also one of the plants that has grown from the scattered seeds. It is a lovely flower and may get moved to one of the other flowerbeds this fall.

Also in bloom now in the Hippie or Orange Flower Bed ….

So many lovely Lilies. 'Elodie' is beautiful. 'Rosey Returns' is a gorgeous new addition and 'Wild Horses' is a stunner as well. I just love the 'Sunset' Echinacea. It's a great colour.

As always, inspiring and beautiful.

I need some rose advice. My roses have black spot and have lost a lot of leaves. Is there something I can do besides cutting them back severly and crossing my fingers?

I hope you get some rain. We had a dry spell back in April, but since then we have had consistent rain about once or twice a week. I don't know what summer will bring. Your garden looks lovely. I am particularly drawn to that Hot Papaya echinacea...beautiful!

Hi Lona,
You have a nice assortment of blooms. I love your daylilies and other lilies. I have daylilies in almost all of my beds, too.

I need to try to grow more plants from seeds. I have been wanting to get that native/wild coreopsis, and have not found any in pots.

Interesting to see the different coloured echinaceas, I had no idea of the variety.

I love lilies - I also have to keep spraying them with Deer Off to fend off the hungry beasts. This year the lily blooms are actually lasting a decent amount of time here. Usually the NC heat kills them off pretty quickly. I hope this summer won't be as dry as you think it might be!

I love that sunset echinacea. What pretty colors!

Love 'Wild Horses'. I am amazed that you can keep any of those beauties with deer near by!
